HIT-5-Weeks
4 classes (87 Men, approx.. 17 years old)) trained 5 weeks between summer and autumn for a cross country run:
-3 classes performed 2x30 min. HI(I)T during a regular PE-lesson of 65 minutes.
-One controll class followed the regular program with Swimming, Outdoor-Games (soccer, etc…), athletics and volume based endurance training.
Progress was measured by a shuttle run-test at the beginning and end of the intervention, correlated with individual heartrate (Garmin235).
The 3 classes of the intervention group showed a significantly higher performance (p<0.05) compared to the control class
- Average HRmax. was lower in the post-test (intervention group -4 bpm, control group -8 bpm).
- Possible explanations:
- Repetition had already a negative effect on motivation and commitment.
- The learning effect between run 1 and 2 resulted in a more efficient use of energy.
- Even in heterogeneous, regular PE-classes, HI(I)T can have a beneficial effect:
The intervention group performed significantly better than the control group. However, it is hard to say to what extent the effect is based on physical or motivational parameters: motivation und learning effect have an influence on the result in the shuttle-run-test.
- Each lesson could be combined with a second topic: HI(I)T is less time-consuming than volume-based endurance-training, which is a benefit for versatile PE-lessons.
- To launch HI(I)T in PE as a project with clearly defined testing, beginning and end has shown positive effects on motivation:
- Introduction with important information on the effect of HI(I)T
- Manageable duration of 5 weeks
- Insight for students into their individual performance and progress
